Stuck in a slump? Give your mitochondrial health a reboot, with a Cell Renewal Biostack

Feeling a bit "meh"? First-time biohacker Evie spends an afternoon at Biowell's Battersea clinic trying a three-part biostack: IHHT breathing, a tailored IV drip and full-body red light. Here's what each felt like and whether small, regular top-ups are worth it.

Your body, mitochondrial health (and future self) will thank you.

Everyone hits a slump now and then. The clocks go back, the evenings shrink, a training plan stalls, and suddenly everything feels like hard work. What if the answer wasn't a dramatic overhaul, but small, regular top-ups that stop the slide before it really starts?

That's the case for gradual gains. It isn't glamorous, but anyone who has ever gone back for a third plate at a buffet knows small things add up – in both directions. If autumn has left you feeling a bit… 'meh', this is a good moment for a reset. Modest changes are realistic and sustainable, and the therapies now available make some of them a lot easier.

Mitochondrial health (for beginners)

To understand energy, you have to start small – at the level of the cell. Healthy cells underpin energy production, organ function and repair, and there's growing interest in how cellular health relates to immunity, resilience and how well we age.

Zoom in further and you reach the mitochondria: tiny structures inside almost every cell that turn the food we eat and the oxygen we breathe into usable energy. When they're working well, the cell is well supplied – and so, in turn, are the tissues and organs it belongs to.

Add stress, illness, injury, hormonal change and simple ageing, and it's unlikely your mitochondria are running at their best all the time. The trouble is that no amount of skipping coffee or dry-brushing reaches that deep. This is where a focused, clinician-led approach comes in: start with the goal (in my case, energy at the cellular level), then build a stack of therapies around it.

Introducing: the Cellular Wellbeing Stack

Biowell's Cellular Wellbeing Stack brings three therapies together in a single visit at the Battersea clinic, all aimed at the same thing – supporting the body's energy and renewal at a cellular level:

  • IHHT (Intermittent Hypoxia Hyperoxia Therapy) – 24 minutes
  • NAD+ infusion – 45 to 60 minutes
  • Red Light Therapy – 22 minutes

The whole stack is £477, booked as one package, and the team confirms it's the right combination for you before you book. Let's dive in.

A biohack for breathwork

The pollen count sees me arriving at IHHT bunged up and slightly worried about spending time in an oxygen mask. In practice it's relaxing. The mask alternates between lower-oxygen air (like being at altitude) and oxygen-rich air, and the switches are noticeable but gentle – my body seems to settle into them on its own.

During the oxygen-rich phases I take the first properly deep breaths I've managed in weeks. It's a bit like fresh mountain air, minus the après-ski. As the cycles go on, each exhale feels stronger, as if my lungs have had a thorough clean.

The session takes 24 minutes. I've had the odd breathwork class where everything clicks and it feels incredible – and plenty more where I just got frustrated.

Breathwork relies on technique; IHHT doesn't ask you to do anything except sit still and breathe while your body adapts. No frustration, no exertion – just steady, oxygenating breaths working at that all-important cellular level.

Topping up at the source: the NAD+ infusion

The infusion in this stack is NAD+, a coenzyme found in every cell that mitochondria rely on to convert nutrients into energy. Levels naturally fall as we get older, which is why NAD+ has become one of the most talked-about areas in longevity and cellular health.

Delivering it by IV means it goes straight into the bloodstream rather than through the gut, so absorption isn't limited by digestion. A clinician reviews your health history first and stays with you throughout – infusions are prescribed to you, not picked off a menu, and the team will say if NAD+ isn't the right fit.

It's also the slowest part of the visit, at 45 to 60 minutes, which makes it a good time to sit back with a book and let the afternoon slow down.

Shine a light

I need no persuading on red light therapy. I already use an LED mask at home, and a couple of weeks without it shows: my skin gets drier and more sensitive, and pigmentation creeps back. So I'm delighted to find that Biowell's full-body red light bed covers the skin benefits and adds near-infrared light, which reaches deeper into tissue to support cellular recovery and repair.

Lying in the warm glow with my eyes closed is genuinely lovely – that drowsy, poolside-nap feeling. Part of it may simply be 22 minutes where nobody needs anything from me, but red light sessions are widely reported to lift mood too. Either way, I'm reluctant to get up when it's over.

The verdict – indulgence or investment?

We're working harder than ever to stay strong and age well. Wearables tell us how we're doing day to day, but nobody is immune to setbacks – and it's frustrating when the numbers won't move despite the effort.

When we put time and money into feeling better, we rightly expect something back. So perhaps self-care can look less like a duvet day and a cream bun and more like something that actually builds over time.

A stack that supports cellular and mitochondrial health, now and for later, feels like the better trade – and the more consistently you do it, the further it takes you.

Taking it further: the Cellular Health Programme

The Cellular Wellbeing Stack is a single visit. If you want to work on energy at the cellular baseline over time, the Cellular Health Programme is the longer route, sitting under Biowell's Longevity pillar.

The stack: Compression, IHHT, Cryotherapy, Red Light Therapy and PEMF Timescale: a single visit, at least twice a month Price: £3,510 (save £390 vs. booking separately), or 6 × £585

Cellular Health+

Adds a Biowell Signature or NAD+ infusion for targeted cellular support – £3,672, or 6 × £612 Built-in clinical review: part way through, we look at what has changed and agree whether to continue, adjust the stack, or stop.

It's best for people who want to understand their energy at the cellular level, prefer to measure before they change things, and like a longevity-led approach.
